SPOILER WARNING!

GRANDMASTA's Review on "Slabtown" and Master Blog

Howdy wikians! We are four weeks into Season 5, and boy, have the episodes been delivering. Haven't got very high expectations for this one, but I hope to be proved wrong!

I'm taking over the Master blog from WalkerMaimer this week, as he is on hiatus. Without further ado, this is my review for Slabtown.

Recap:

After Bob's death at the hands of the Termites, half the group is taking refuge at Gabriel's church, waiting for Daryl and Carol to return. Late at night, Daryl returns...but who is he with? And so the story of survival continues.

AMC TWD Slabtown

Beth

So we start off with Beth awakening in a hospital bed, followed by Emily Kinney poorly portraying a 'freaked out' person, and a completely rushed scene where we are introduced to the hospital workers. I for one have not missed Beth at all. All of a sudden, Beth is working for the hospital people? Did we miss something? Beth being the hospital's bitch goes on for a while until Noah, portrayed by Tyler James Williams, and a weird officer that runs the place called Dawn, explain the intentions of the people that work there and what they do, like 20 minutes into the episode. The opening sequence of Beth getting to know all the hospital people was very rushed, and it took a damn while for the characters to finally explain what was going on.

Beth starts to familiarize herself with the hospital and seems pretty calm about being trapped in this madhouse, being forced into slave labor since she 'owes it' to Dawn. On top of that, Beth lets a guy shove a lollypop in her mouth. Why didn't she bloody stop him? She almost looked like she was enjoying it for a second, until Dr Edwards spoiled the party.

Everything in this episode from here on is rushed. After devising a plan with a beaten up Noah to escape, Beth locates keys to the elevator(?) in Dawn's office. The rapey policeman comes in, of course with the intentions to rape Beth. The scene is abruptly cut short when Beth strikes the guy, and he is devoured, with nobody in the hospital hearing.

Beth and Noah then escape down the elevator, and after a dragged out sequence of them coming down the shaft, there is quite possibly one of the most rushed action sequences in TWD history. All these zombies just get shot in the head with a pistol, one after another, without Beth having to reload once. Like father, like daughter. Dawn and the other cops stop Bethy from leaving but Noah escapes, leaving the viewer with a horrifying image of Emily Kinney smiling. Sometime later, Beth just openly admits to playing part in the rape cops death to Dawn, and Dawn smacks Beth--again. Beth then becomes Sherlock and figures out why Edwards let Beth kill a patient before, which he had an entirely justifiable reason to do so. But BETH IS NOT IMPRESSED. She grabs a bloody scalpel and goes to kill Edwards, yes, kill Edwards since he made Beth kill some beatdown stranger so he himself wasn't murdered. Edwards is the only nice one to you there, you idiot.

Beth doesn't kill him though cos Carol just pops up in a bed. End episode.

Gotta say, there was some lackluster writing surrounding Beth in this episode. I wasn't impressed, and at times, I was bored. She could've easily stopped that guy from putting that lollypop in her mouth, and she needs to reload every once in a while.

Oh, and, y'now, question these people on whether or not they know any survivors she was with...sure, Beth only knew Daryl was alive post prison, but she could've asked.

"The Hospital"

Admittedly, the hospital storyline was pretty cool, although I failed to understand what exactly was going on in my first watch. The cop's intentions were great, 'we help you, so you help us'. Dawn also had a good storyline, looking past all the horrible things the cops do the nurses so they can keep on living properly. Even though I don't see the problem with saying no to rape every once in a while.

All the hospital staff wearing clean clothes for once and being well groomed was...weird, to say the least. It was a bit creepy, of course, but I fail to see why anyone 3 or so years into a ZA would put that much effort into their appearance.

Dr Edwards was a very interesting character for the time he was on screen, as was Noah. Noah had a very interesting backstory, and is probably the only character from this episode I would really like to see again, even though the cast is terribly crowded at the moment. I honestly though Tyler James Wililams did well in this role, as did almost every actor that appeared through the hospital. Only real complaints would come from Beth, though I admit shoddy writing at times leads to bad acting.

One thing I do have to question though throughout this episode is some of the camera angles, which were just weird. A notable one being when Beth finds Joan's dead body. When the camera pans to a lifeless Joan, it looks like shes a midget, or a very small playtoy. Maybe its just me, but I was very confused when that scene occurred.

Overall

"Slabtown"

Writing: Directing: Acting: Total:
6.5 7 6.5 6.5

Not my favorite episode of TWD, but not the worst. I found it very hard to follow initially, however I was impressed by the new characters and their actors. Was a bit of a letdown since the last three episodes were amazing in my opinion. I'm also not looking forward to having episodes set on individual characters again, like in Season 4B. I hate those episodes.

Also, can someone write in the comments why this episode is called Slabtown? I wanna know.

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right? What did you think of this episode? Love it? Hate it? Why? Don't hesitate, just write it up down in the comment section! Being hostile towards other users in the comments section is, as always, NOT tolerated.

Thank you all for reading my very first Masta blog, I'm sure Maimer will be back next week. Stay frosty.

If you have any personal problems or anything that you'd like to discuss just leave me a talk page message or sumthin'.
