I saw the lights go out on the world three days before my scheduled reentry. I speak to you from my grave…
―Valery to Victor Strand informing he saw the lights go out across the world.[src]

Valery Stepanovich Vashchenko is a survivor of the outbreak in AMC's Fear the Walking Dead. He is a Russian cosmonaut stranded in space during the apocalypse.

Overview[]

From what is heard of Valery, he seems to be a friendly, sophisticated, intelligent, and wise man. He had been launched into space and ended up being stranded after the outbreak began. From above, he witnessed all the lights in the cities go dark. When Victor Strand manages to make contact with him via radio, he is first heard talking to himself in a very drowsy manner, most likely trying to cope with his situation. Valery is civil and respectful when talking with Victor. He is shown to have accepted his fate in space, calling his ship his grave. He seems to have a love for literature and champagne, longing to have one last drink of vodka before he dies. He is shown to be very knowledgeable, such as quoting Karl Marx about how last words are for fools who haven't said enough. Though Victor's chat with Valery was brief, it seems to have resonated with him and gave him time to just sit down and have a chat with a new friend in the middle of the harsh apocalypse.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

Russia[]

Nothing is known about Valery's life prior to the outbreak, other than he was a Russian cosmonaut that had been launched into space to the International Space Station via Soyuz around late 2009-early 2010 and he was scheduled to return around August 29, 2010.

Post-Apocalypse[]

"Children of Wrath"[]

When the world fell to the undead, Valery was stranded in orbit on the International Space Station, where he witnessed the lights of the cities below go dark three days before his scheduled re-entry. Approximately 51 days into the apocalypse, he made radio contact with Victor Strand, having overheard Valery's singing over the radio of the Abigail. Victor and Valery then have a brief chat where they talk about their love for literature; Valery then reveals to Victor that he saw lights go out across the world, and with no way to return back to Earth, he is resigned to his fact that he will die in the space station. Victor tells Valery he believes that the world has now ended; Valery states the world will only end once humanity ends. Their conversation is then severed when Victor loses radio contact with Valery.

After an unknown period of time, Valery presumably died as he eventually runs out of oxygen in the space station. It is unknown whether or not he reanimated. [1]

Trivia[]

  • Valery is the first Russian character to appear in the TV Universe, the second being Anna Valery.
    • Coincidentally, both happen to have "Valery" in their name.
    • He is also the first (and so far only) known character in the TV Universe to reside in outer space.
  • Before being contacted by Victor, Valery is singing The Cyan Blue Express from the Russian cartoon "Cheburashka".
  • Since Valery was isolated from the rest of humanity when the outbreak began, it's unknown whether or not he reanimated after he died, or if he is even able to.
  • Given that there are multiple emergency Soyuz spacecraft docked to the ISS at all times, it's likely that Valery opted to remain onboard the space station whilst his fellow crew members returned to Earth, leaving him stranded. The reason for this is unclear, though given how he belives the world is dead, he likely didn't want to get infected by or killed by walkers.
