Walter Schowski is a survivor of the outbreak in AMC's Fear the Walking Dead and Dead in the Water. He was a crew member on the USS Pennsylvania, serving as the Chief of the Boat. After escaping the sub, Walter volunteered to take one of the keys needed to fire the missiles, which led to him being hunted down by a doomsday cult.
Overview[]
A member of the USS Pennsylvania, Walter serves to protect his country and looks out for his friends. When an outbreak happens in the submarine, Walter is one of the few to make it out alive. He manages to help Riley, Pierce, and McGuire escape the weapons room. Walter bravely volunteers to take one of the keys to launch the nukes and promises to guard it with his life. However, years later, Walter would end up being a target by a doomsday cult, ironically with Riley as one of the high-ranking members, due to his possession of a key. The cult hires a bounty hunter to track Walter to down. When Walter finds Emile's camp, he is shown to be a friendly and civil man. However, he realizes that the dog that had been chasing him belongs to Emile. Before he can talk any further, Emile decapitates Walter to finish his job.
Pre-Apocalypse[]
Location Unknown[]
Nothing is known about Walter's life prior to or as the outbreak began, except that he was a master chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy and the chief of the boat of the USS Pennsylvania.
Post-Apocalypse[]
Dead in the Water[]
"This Ain't It"[]
Walter contacts Riley over the sub's comms, revealing that a group had made it to the bridge, but they are now stuck there with too many walkers outside. Getting an idea, Riley asks if Walter has ever pulled a chicken switch and, laughing, Walter orders them to hold on tight. As Riley, Pierce and McGuire brace themselves, Walter announces an emergency blow over the comms and then blows the sub's ballast tanks, rapidly sending it to the surface and throwing the swarming walkers around and to the ground.
Riley joins McGuire, Walter and six other survivors at the outer hatch, simply shaking his head when McGuire asks about Pierce. Removing one of the launch keys, Riley tries to give it to McGuire who refuses to take it. Walter decides to take the key instead and Riley orders him to "guard it with your life. They can never be in the same room again" which Walter promises to do. Riley tells his remaining crew that it's been an honor to serve with all of them and now they have to go find their families which is all that they have left. Riley gives the order to abandon ship and the eight survivors of the USS Pennsylvania climb out of the hatch to the surface.
Season 6[]
Due to his possession of one of the sub's launch keys, Walter was hunted by two men and their group, who also hired Emile LaRoux to retrieve the key.
"The End Is the Beginning"[]
Walter is seen stumbling into Emile's camp as he is preparing dinner. Emile welcomes him in and offers him food, to which Walter accepts, telling him that he has been followed for days. Walter introduces himself. The two are interrupted by Rufus, who comes in barking at Walter but is calmed by Emile. Emile tells Walter that it is his dog before decapitating him with his axe and then takes the key from his body. Rufus licks Walter's severed head before Emile puts it in a box with his name.
