Part 1
Welch was either already deployed near the United States-Mexico border or was sent there shortly after the apocalypse began. He was stationed at a camp with other soldiers that fell victim to the undead a short time later. Welch and the other zombified soldiers were eventually put down by Sierra as she scavenged the camp for supplies.

After being deployed to guard the United States-Mexico border the camp fell victim to the undead, which resulted in Welch being bitten by the oncoming walkers.

While the camp is scavenged by Sierra a zombified Welch spots her and attacks her, where she stabs him in the head.
