Pre-Apocalypse
Georgia
Will Dixon was born in 1944 or 1945, named after his late father, William Dixon. William was conscripted into the U.S. Military during World War II as a Private in the army and died on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944, during the D-Day invasion. Will was raised by his mother in Georgia. They lived in poverty and driven further into it by his father's death. In 1953, Will's mother married his stepfather and gave birth to his half-brother, Jess Collins.
As a teenager, Will had his first son, Merle, with his wife. Several years later, he had another son named Daryl. An alcoholic, Will physically abused and neglected his sons on numerous occasions, especially after their mother died in a house fire. Will quit showing any affection that he had for them after the incident. At some point, with Merle incarcerated in juvenile hall, Will would partake in abusing alcohol with a waitress, as Daryl found himself lost in the wilderness for nine days, forcing him to consume wild berries and utilize poison oak as a substitute for toilet paper. Eventually, Daryl managed to find his way back home. Upon arrival, however, he realized that Will had not noticed his absence, and thus Daryl simply walked through the back door and made himself a sandwich.[1]
While Merle was in jail, Will started going hunting with Daryl and Jess on a couple of on-and-off months. Daryl was the son he cared a little for, as he would always blame Merle for the death of his wife. Despite this, however, Daryl ended up with both emotional and physical scars from his abuse at the hands of his father.

- At the start of the game, Will is a "false protagonist", a character controlled by the player at the start of a game, who is not the actual protagonist.
- Will is mentioned numerous times by his sons in the TV Series.
- In "L'âme Perdue" of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, when asked about the scars on his back, Daryl tells Isabelle that his dad was a smoker, heavily implying that Will burned his back with lit cigarettes.
- His full first name is likely William, just like his father, William Dixon.
