The Woodbury Conflict is the first major conflict of the series and occurred during the third and fourth seasons of AMC's The Walking Dead.

History[]

The conflict began with the capture of Glenn Rhee and Maggie Greene at the hands of The Governor's right hand man and former member of the survivors, Merle Dixon. The Prison survivors are informed of their kidnapping by Michonne Hawthorne, a survivor who had recently left Woodbury due to her distrust of them. Wanting to get them back, Rick Grimes along with Daryl Dixon, Oscar, and Michonne head to Woodbury.

While they make their way to the community, Merle tortures both Glenn and Maggie for information regarding their group's location and for the status of Merle's brother, Daryl. Maggie eventually gives in when The Governor threatens to kill Glenn. That night, Rick's team arrives to Woodbury and sneaks in, eventually reaching Glenn and Maggie. However, having been alerted by their presence, The Governor orders a manhunt for them.

In the resulting battle, Oscar is left fatally wounded and Daryl is captured, forced to fight against Merle in a duel. Michonne also goes off on her own to kill the Governor and the two get into a fight. Michonne manages to stab her attacker in the eye and quickly flees before she can be caught.

Rick and what's left of his attack team head to the pit to rescue Daryl, killing a couple citizens before fleeing with everyone including Merle who has been accused by Woodbury of working with Rick's group. The following day people at Woodbury panic but Andrea Harrison keeps the populous as calm as possible.

Back at the Prison, Daryl and Merle leave as the group feels unsafe with Merle around. They also encounter a group but Rick, still dealing with the loss of his wife, force them to leave the Prison, eventually teaming up with Woodbury.

The next day, while Rick is still reeling from his loss of Lori, the prison is attacked with a walker bomb. Axel is killed during the assault, while the rest are shot at by The Governor and his men before leaving. Rick is nearly killed by walkers but is saved by the Dixon brothers who are let back into the group.

Returning to Woodbury, The Governor assembles an army to attack the Prison head on and Andrea decides it is best to go to the Prison herself with the help of Milton Mamet, the Governor's assistant. Andrea arrives and deliberates with them before deciding to return to Woodbury.

Andrea, having returned to Woodbury, devises a plan to have Rick and the Governor to meet and discuss the current situation between the two, meeting the next day. Blake tells Rick to give up Michonne so he will leave the prison group alone. He will have two days to think about the offer. After the meeting, the two groups go back to their respective homes.

Following the meeting, Rick informs the Prison that they will have to go to war with Woodbury to end the conflict and Blake informs his soldier, Martinez to ambush the prison and leave no on alive except Michonne.

Andrea, learning of this, flees to the Prison but fails to reach the community as Blake caught up to her and brought her back to Woodbury.

Rick tells Hershel and Daryl that they are going to give up Michonne by noon, as it has been two days since the meeting with the Governor, and that Merle is the one assigned to complete the job. Merle takes Michonne to a farm store to meet with the Governor after capturing her. Michonne convinces him to let her go and he decides to confront Blake.

Merle attacked The Governor's army, killing Woodbury soldiers but was overpowered by The Governor and killed.

The Governor and the Woodbury army head to the prison, except for Tyreese and Sasha, who decided to stay and defend Woodbury. They break and find the Prison empty only to be ambushed and forced out of the Prison. Philip orders them to go back to the prison and fight. They refuse, and he kills everybody in cold blood except Martinez and Shumpert. The three men drive off to camp out in a field.

Rick and Michonne head to Woodbury to find it abandoned by Blake and Andrea dying after being bit by Milton Mamet who had been killed by Blake for his disloyal actions. Rick then allows Woodbury citizens to come to the Prison to start over including Tyreese and Sasha Williams, the only surviving members of their group.

Rick, Daryl, Michonne, Tyreese, Sasha, Karen, and about 15 Woodbury survivors arrive at the prison fulfilling Andrea's wishes of everyone living together in peace.

For a few months the Prison lived in relative peace. Following a flu outbreak, The Governor returned to the Prison with a new group and a tank. Blake, who had been living off on his own for months, found Martinez and his new group but quickly overthrew Martinez and took control.

Blake convinced the group to attack the Prison and take it, started with the kidnapping of Michonne and Hershel. The Governor's Militia is outside the fences of the prison with a tank. The Governor calls for Rick to talk and the two talk. Rick tries to make peace by offering them a place in the prison but the Governor doesn't have it and decapitates Hershel. A firefight ensues and in the end, Blake is killed by Michonne and the Prison is destroyed.
